A Little Inner Wisdom for Washington

I was out walking Duke the other morning when my mind drifted to the ongoing government shutdown. Not the politics of it — just the feeling of it. The heaviness. The uncertainty. The way everything slows down when the system that’s meant to guide us gets stuck.

And then this thought came to me:

The government is like the brain.

We, the people, are the body.

The government — the “brain” of the nation — is designed to guide, coordinate, and support the whole system. And the body — the people — responds, adapts, moves, works, lives, and feels the effects.

When the brain is aware, reflective, and flexible, the body functions smoothly. There’s flow. Clarity. Strength.

But when the brain gets rigid or caught in old patterns, the body tightens. Stress rises. Uncertainty lingers. Things don’t feel like they’re working.

And that’s where we are now — as a collective body.

Waiting. Holding. Bracing.

Now imagine — just for a moment — what it would be like if the government tapped into inner wisdom the way we are learning to do in our own lives:

Picture Congress sitting cross-legged in a meditation circle.

Phones off.

Breathing together.

Listening before reacting.

You can’t help but chuckle — and also feel the possibility in the image.

Because when our mind is loud, defensive, or gripping to be right… our body inevitably pays the price.

And when the mind softens — when it becomes curious instead of certain — the body shifts. Tension dissolves. Something opens.

This isn’t only a national metaphor — it’s a personal one.

We each have places where:

  • we hold on too tightly
  • resist change
  • replay old beliefs
  • forget to listen inward

And the “body” of our lives — our energy, mood, relationships, and health — reflects it.

Inner wisdom is what becomes available when the mind remembers it’s not the sole authority — just one voice in a much wiser system.

A Gentle Practice: Sending Wisdom Where It’s Needed

Take a moment now. No special breathing required — just awareness.

1. Bring the idea of “the government” to mind.

Not the characters. Not the disagreements.

Just the system itself — as if it were one mind that’s currently overwhelmed.

2. Place your hand lightly on your heart.

Feel your own wisdom — the quiet, grounded kind that doesn’t need to prove or defend.

3. Now, with sincerity (and maybe a warm smile), send this inward message:

May you remember you are here to support the whole body.

May clarity find you.

May softness open where rigidity has been.

May wisdom rise where ego once led.

4. And yes — hold the image of that meditation circle.

Not perfect. Not enlightened. Just… trying.

Even imagining it shifts something.

Because when we send frustration, we reinforce division.

But when we send wisdom, we reinforce possibility.

And the body — us — influences the brain too.

Closing Reflection

We can’t always control what the “brain of the country” is doing — but we can nurture our own internal clarity and softness. And the more of us who do that, the more the collective shifts. One person’s inner wisdom really does ripple outward. So we practice. Gently. Consistently. Together.

We live in a culture hungry for quick fixes. Today, that promise often comes in the form of injections like Ozempic—medications that make weight loss fast, dramatic, and visible. My own quick fixes looked different. They didn’t come from a prescription. They came from stress, control, endless workouts, and strict eating. And yes, they worked. The weight came off. Sometimes dramatically. I reached the body I believed was “ideal.” But here’s the truth: skinny didn’t mean healthy.

But then came the teasing. The comparisons. The quiet corrections. I started to hear: ● You are so ugly with those spots and red hair ● I can do it better than you ● Maybe the worse was being called “thunder thighs” And slowly, those whispers became loops.
