It’s Not Just You If we don’t create space within, we may never hear what’s truly ours
A reflection on how constant distraction keeps us from noticing what’s quietly trying to guide us—and what can change when we finally pause.

We all have habits we don’t even realize we have.
Little things we do automatically…
without thinking.
Reaching for our phone.
Scrolling for a second.
Checking something we didn’t really need to check.
Not because we planned to.
Just because it’s what we do now.
And the thing is…
we don’t even notice when it happens.
And what we don’t notice… quietly shapes us.
Maybe it’s not just distraction…
Maybe we’ve become so used to doing…
that being with ourselves feels unfamiliar.
After my last post, someone shared something with me that stayed.
She said,
“I think about these things… but I never realized anyone else would feel like this or write it.”
And that stayed with me—because I’ve felt that too.
And maybe that’s part of this…
We’re having these moments.
We’re just not staying with them long enough to notice.
And even when we do… it can feel like we’re the only ones.
The Moments We Move Past
It’s rarely anything big.
Just small pauses in the middle of the day.
Driving.
Walking the dog.
Cleaning dishes.
A moment where nothing is happening.
And almost without thinking…
we fill it.
We reach for something.
A phone.
A screen.
Something to watch.
Something to scroll.
Not because we need to.
But because the space feels unfamiliar.
Maybe confusing…
even a little overwhelming.
Life Changed in the Silence
I never saw myself as a writer—
until I started to listen
to what showed up in those quiet moments.
Not when I was scrolling.
Not when I was busy.
But when I stopped…
and allowed myself to feel what was underneath.
And if I’m honest…
what I found there wasn’t always peaceful.
There was anger.
Frustration.
A heaviness I hadn’t fully let myself sit with.
For years, I worked with thousands of adults—many in midlife—
who had acquired disabilities.
I witnessed lives change…
sometimes slowly…
sometimes in an instant.
Dreams disrupted.
Paths altered.
Identities questioned.
And something about that stayed with me.
It wasn’t something I could just move past.
So I sat with it.
And in that space—
in the discomfort of those emotions—
something unexpected arose.
A quiet voice.
Write.
It didn’t make sense.
I wasn’t a writer.
But I allowed the feeling… and it didn’t go away.
So I listened.
And I tried.
What started as a way to process what I was feeling…
became something more.
A way to express.
To connect.
To share something that felt true.
And I realized…
if my words could reach even one person—
help them feel seen… understood… less alone—
it was worth it.
That quiet moment…
that feeling I almost ignored…
became my first book, The Vibrant Sage—
and so much more that followed.
And that’s when I began to understand…
what can come from those quiet spaces.
What Begins There
If we don’t create space to hear ourselves…
we don’t just miss a thought.
We begin to live from what’s already there.
Old patterns.
Old versions of ourselves.
Expectations that were never truly ours.
And from the outside…
it can look like we’re moving forward.
But inside…
something feels off.
Because we’re moving—
but not necessarily choosing.
What We Once Knew
When we were younger…
we didn’t try to escape our thoughts and feelings.
We experienced them.
Imagination and curiosity weren’t something we had to find.
They were already there.
I could be a princess.
I could be Batman saving the world.
Not pretending.
Becoming.
There was no second-guessing it.
No comparing.
No checking.
Just… being in it.
And now?
Most adults barely give that quiet pause—
where a thought begins…
and imagination can follow—
a chance to breathe…
before reaching for something else.
It’s Not the Phone
It’s easy to blame the phone.
But it’s not the phone.
It’s how quickly we’ve learned
to move away from ourselves.
We see it everywhere.
In classes…
in cafés…
in restaurants…
even walking the dog…
Phones in hand.
Scrolling.
Checking.
Or sitting in front of a screen—
TV on…
something playing…
just to fill the space.
Instead of allowing ourselves to feel what’s there.
And it’s not judgment.
It’s awareness.
Because presence isn’t about perfection.
It’s about noticing.
Noticing when you move away.
Noticing when you fill the space.
Noticing when something tries to rise…
and doesn’t get the chance.
A Quiet Invitation
So maybe this isn’t about changing everything.
Just this…
The next time you find yourself
in one of those in-between moments…
pause.
Just for a breath longer than you normally would.
No phone.
No distraction.
And notice what’s there.
Not what you think should be there.
Not what makes sense.
Just… what’s there.
Because sometimes…
what shows up in those moments
isn’t random.
It’s something worth noticing.
And maybe…
worth staying with.
And maybe next…
we begin to remember
what we once knew—
how to imagine…
how to be curious…
how to explore.
